The Sun Microsystems Solaris Operating System is a merger of the AT&T UNIX System V Release 4 (SVR4) and SunOS 5.0, an earlier version of the UNIX operation system based on the Berkeley Standard Distribution (BSD). Many portions of the Solaris operating system are still labeled as SunOS. The latest version, Solaris 9, was released June, 2002.

Since certification is based on operating system version, a certification never expires or requires re-certification. However, they are of little value when the associated version of the operating system is no longer used.

Two certification tracks are available: The System Administration certification requires passing two exams, however starting with Solaris 8 a single upgrade exam can be taken instead. The Network Administration certification requires passing one exam.

General information on the Sun Solaris certification process, test objectives, registration procedure, etc. is available at Sun's Certification Page.
